Technology Tools
Technology is a growing component of the SFUSD Mathematics Core Curriculum and should always be used in the service of math learning. The guiding question for SFUSD technology and math integration is: How might we support intentional use of technology to prioritize both discourse and target mathematics? | We are developing videos that introduce some of our preferred Technology Tools: |
Desmos provides a graphing calculator and an online bank of activities that help students learn about graphing and algebraic thinking. Students can use the graphing calculator to graph known functions, input data points and find a function or line of best fit, or explore how manipulating equations affects the graph of the functions. Desmos is best used when students need to create and modify graphs quickly. The graphs can also be saved and used later. Teachers can use the classroom activities to help students to explore aspects of graphing and algebra in a game-like environment. There is a Desmos graphing calculator app for tablets, though its functionality is not as broad as the website version. Free and recommended for grades 6-12. |
Dreambox is a web-based, adaptive learning system designed for grades K-8. It has activities in which students practice important mathematical concepts in a fun, game-like, visual environment. It is not a full math curriculum, but concentrates on conceptual understanding of the four operations, place value, algebraic thinking, fractions, decimals, percents, and integers. Dreambox is best used as a supplementary math activity in an elementary or middle school class or during computer lab time. It can also be used as homework or after school. It is available in Spanish. A 14-day free trial is available. Subscription-based and recommended for grades K-8. |

ConceptuaMath provides online dynamic manipulatives and curriculum to support student learning of fractions, multiplication, and division. The dynamic manipulatives, support students in creating and connecting representations of fractions and operations. They can be used for classroom demonstration with a teacher account or for student exploration and problem-solving with more accounts. The paid curriculum for grades 3-6 includes daily classroom discourse support, individual online learning, journal prompts, and investigations about fractions, multiplication, and division. Teachers monitor student progress via an online interface. Dynamic manipulatives are available with free registration. A limited number of sample lessons are available. Subscription-based and recommended for grades 3-6. |
Tuvalabs is a web-based platform that brings together curated data sets from authentic data sources with easy-to-use yet powerful data analysis and visualization tools. There are also inquiry-based lessons and tasks. Analyzing data, identifying patterns, and extracting useful information are valuable 21st century skills. Tuvalabs’ visualization tools promote conceptual understanding of data analysis, such as histograms, line plots, and bivariate data. Graphs can be downloaded as pdfs and used in presentations. Teachers and students can use Tuvalabs to explore data sets on a wide variety of topics. These data sets provide context while learning about data analysis. 25 Datasets & Activities available for free. Tuva Premium, by subscription, gives access to 350+ datasets and graphing tool. |
GeoGebra is a dynamic math and algebra tool. The geometry system (points, lines, and other figures) and the algebraic system (equations, coordinates, and functions) interact and reflect each other and help students make connections between geometry and algebra. Teachers can use lessons created by others, or create their own, to guide students to explore many facets of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics through dynamic systems “worksheets.” Geogebra is best used when students can explore the dynamic system to make sense of a mathematical concept for themselves. Geogebra can be downloaded onto tablets and computers, and can also be used through the website. Free and recommended for grades 6-12. |
